What Steven said is right hands-on helps the most, before I took the Penn Foster course I had already built 3 AR-15's from stripped lower receivers by reading the AR15.com forums and by watching hundreds of youtube videos. I took the course to get a better understanding of Gunsmithing as a whole and there are plenty I have learned. Though I doubt I'll go the blacksmith route to make muzzle loading barrels, but I have the knowledge to do so if I need to!
