Re: Practicum 1 Issues

Let me start by asking, which skills are you most worried about? Are you currently working in a clinic/hospital?

The skills that are required by PF are the skills required by the AVMA for us to obtain our credentials as future vet techs. If you can break down the 29 skills required for P1 into small groups, it makes them less daunting. If you've had any experience in a vet setting, go with what you know first and then proceed to skills you are less familiar/comfortable with. If you have a good team at the clinic you do your Practicum at, a team effort can be used to help you succeed at any or all the skills required. My coworkers were great helping with photo requirements for skills, making sure hospitalized cases were available and letting me borrow their personal pets for any skills I couldn't use my own pets for. (As a result of my team helping with my skills, 3 coworkers have started classes through PF.)

PF assigns a Practicum advisor to not only approve/grade your skills, but also to guide you through your skills. If you have specific questions about skills you can contact them through the email address provided at the time your site has been approved and you're told to start your skills. They want you to succeed in this program. 200 hours is a minimum requirement and they work with you on your time limit for your Practicum. I work full time at my clinic and logged more than the 200 hour requirement to finish my skills. Some skills require fate and opportunity. I even lost a week in the middle of P1 because our clinic flooded for the first time ever. My advisor was great at passing that info on to PF and ensuring my skills could be continued once my clinic was open again.

Don't become overwhelmed before you get started, go into it ready and willing to learn new things.

I hope this helped.
